Trek to Tung Fort
Tung Fort
1 Day
Event Overview
Tung Fort is also known as “Kathingad” is located in the Lonavala region and offers a commanding view of the Pavna Dam. The fort was built with the intention of keeping a watch over the Bhor Ghats and the Pavna region. This was one of the forts handed over to the Mughals according to the Treaty of Purandar.
Not much is known about the origin of this fort. In 1657, Shivaji Maharaj took hold of this fort alongwith other forts in the vicinity viz; Tung, Tikona, Lohgad, Visapur. In 1818, the Marathas fought gallantly against the British Army for three days but the fort had to be surrendered. After taking hold of the fort British found the ornaments of the Goddess Korai which they reportedly gifted away to the Mumbadevi temple in Mumbai.
