Trek to Hamta Pass and Chandra Tal Lake

Manali, Hamta Pass, Chander Tal Lake
5 Days4 Nights

Event Overview

One of the most delightful treks in the Manali region affording views of lush green valleys, towering snow clad mountains and barren hills with surrealistic forms and shapes. Excellent for the trekker who is reasonably fit. Leaving the Manali valley, the trek proceeds through evergreen cool forests of walnut, oak and the occasional alder. The views of the entire Kullu valley are excellent and are glimpsed all along the trail. Once atop the Hamta Pass (4300m.), another spectacular panorama of peaks appears. Then it is into the Lahaul valley where barren towering mountains rise above lush green fields of potato and barley and the presence of Buddhist culture seems evident. And once atop of the Rohtang Pass (3970m.) another spectacular panorama of peaks appears in to the Lahaul valley and also one can have a dazzling view of luminous vale of the Manali valley. An unforgettable trek, known to very few trekkers and foreigners.

Hamta Pass divides folded mountain valleys and inhabited legendary Gaddis, the sheep herders of the high Himalayan pastures, takes their herds of Sheep from Prini village over Hamta pass to Chhatru, Chhika, Juara, Chhatru, Chandertal Lake, Indersan Peak base (6153m) and winds further beyond in to Spiti Valley, who remain isolated in their picture postcard village for up to 6 months a year. Hamta Pass ‘lateral moraine is a snout of Alain River, which flows down into Aleo Nullah via Chhika and Ooching Bihaii and joins in the Beas River originates from massif Indersan Glacier.

Chandra Tal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,190 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains of scree overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. Situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India), Chandra Taal is a popular destination for trekkers and campers. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are the camping sites. During springtime, these meadows are carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wildflowers.

The lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau, which overlooks the Chandra River. The lake is one of two high-altitude wetlands of India.
