Nidhi Tiwari’s dream drive and Rashmi Koppar, and Dr Soumya Goyal’s excitement to travel, they reached from Delhi to London in 95 days crossing 17 countries.

Conceptualized and initiated by Women Beyond Boundaries, a platform created by Nidhi Tiwari and Smita Mazumdar Rajaram, hopes to encourage, enthuse and execute all women off road drives, across the country and beyond. To make this happen, they also plan to train and assist other women. Also through such drives, they hope to reach out to other women in areas which are difficult to reach and may involve off-road driving.

Nidhi and Smita Rajaram together founded Women Beyond Boundaries  believe that if more and more women start doing off road driving, it would soon become a feminine space, safe and free. The vision of Women Beyond Boundaries is to plan and execute road journeys that would enable, empower and encourage women drivers and travellers to new places.

This journey has been really adventurous and challenging as there was no back-up vehicle. Nidhi who conceptualized the whole journey was the only driver in the group. She is an experienced outdoor educator and off-road jeeper who specializes in outdoor education. She has done a lot of off-the-road jeeping, long distance and high altitude driving and has a volume of outdoor and jeeping experience in the Western Ghats, Indian Himalayan states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nepal, Bhutan, USA, South Africa and Kenya.

In an exclusive interview with Adventures365, Nidhi recalled her remarkable journey with us. As an experienced driver and jeeper, she wants more women drivers to go on such adventurous expeditions.

Nidhi says, “Currently, there are very few women who undertake long distance or off road driving trips. While there are many women drivers in our country, unfortunately, most of the driving is restricted to dropping children to school or driving to the work place. When it comes to longer drives (like when on a holiday), its often the men who drive. So, I guess women not undertaking such trips is also a matter of opportunity. Given that there isn’t much opportunity, her driving skills are lesser honed. Infact sometimes, women themselves might step away and fear taking the vehicle out on their own as their confidence level is so low. This comes from an innate lack of skills wrt handling the vehicles. So  I felt creating a platform to realize their potential would help. And this is the space WBB wants to work in.”

Nidhi says, they were well prepared with documentation and therefore did not face problems at border crossings. She adds, “the only challenge was language perhaps, but thanks to Google translator, even this barrier was overcome. Google maps made navigation very easy.”

Talking about this adventurous journey experience, Nidhi adds,

It was 60 days planned journey but when you are on journey this large, one expects issues to crop up and the plan to be disrupted. We were stuck on the Indo-Myanmar border for nearly 4 weeks due to a bad cyclone that caused landslides and floods. So, that’s how we ended up taking 95 days as opposed to 60 for me.

When we asked what message she wants to give to all the women and young girls, Nidhi says, “I feel there is no end of fear and submission. While I am by no means advocating rebellion, I sincerely feel that women need to take time out. Yes, we have families, work, responsibilities etc., but we are people at the heart of it…and taking care of oneself is extremely important. So, seek out your adventure and once in a while, it’s important to let go”.
